Go West young man
On the 1881 census we had located William Henry Johncock, a railway engine driver in Southwark with his family. In the 1891 census they were not to be found anywhere and no death records either. Had they emigrated?
So we checked emigration records but the family was not found. They must be somewhere. After a prolonged search in several countries we eventually found them in the 1895 Kansas state census living in Nickerson, Reno County. He was working as an engineer.
Obviously William saw the emigration happening at the end of the 19th Century and moved his family to the better opportunities offered in the US. Unfortunately he did not live long to see his ambition fulfilled as we found a death record for him in 1899 when he would have been only 57 years old.
